It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Karl on January 24 after an extended battle with lung cancer. He passed peacefully with family by his side. Karl was born Nov 11, 1940 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to the late Walter and Jean Sepkowski. He was an older brother to the late Ted Sepkowski (late Judy Sepkowski) and Regina Caron (late James Caron). He was a husband to Sheila and a proud father to Mathew (Jodi), Sonya (Mike) and Alysia (Dan). He had five grandchildren Lydia, Lauren, Bradley, Jacob and Adam and loved them dearly.
A journalist through and through, Karl built a long and successful career in radio and television broadcasting, beginning in 1957 as a student with CKCY Radio. Just six years later, he was promoted to News Director, making him the youngest person in Canada to serve in that role. As the television news anchor, Karl delivered the stories of the day to the families of the Sault and Area for more than 25 years. He was a friendly and familiar face in the community and many will remember him as Sault Ste. Marie’s ‘authoritative news voice’. Whether he was covering an upbeat local news item or interviewing the likes of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Karl brought his trademark curiosity and journalistic enthusiasm to every story.
The family extends a heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Geoffroy and all of the staff at the Newmarket Health Centre. The staff became an extended family to Karl and the care he received was much appreciated.
In keeping with Karl’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family will hold a small celebration of life in the summer.
