On Sunday, February 2, after a short but brave battle with metastatic cancer, our dad passed away while surrounded by the love of his daughters.

Abe was the proud father of Lindsey Gioia (Mark) and Nicole (Scott Poirier). Loving papa of Shea-Lynn, Emma, and Brooklyn. In his passing, he is reunited with his father George, his mother Annie, and his brother Stan, as well as many half-siblings. He is survived by his brother Ben (Ros), brother (and best friend) Jake (late Elaine), brother Corey (Lynn), and sister Mary-Ann (Andre). We are comforted by knowing his favourite dog Daphne was eagerly waiting for him on the other side.

Dad was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and camp. He loved travelling across Canada to visit his family. After retiring, Dad decided to explore the world by travelling with his friend and nephew, Jimmy. Together, they fished the East Coast before grabbing Jake and heading to BC to continue their fishing adventures. From there, the three of them headed to Cuba for Dad’s first Caribbean vacation.

When he was close to home, Dad enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. Our younger days were filled with card games, playing catch, and gopher hunting. He loved sitting around a fire outside and watching his favourite shows with his granddaughters. Without fail, Dad made sure there was ham, mashed potatoes, and extra stuffing for his Emma at every holiday meal.

This journey was difficult, and we are thankful for all the support we received. To Kenny and Debbie Sawatzky, we are forever grateful for the care and your friendship with Dad. A special thank you to PSW Maria for your exceptional care of Dad and us.

To honour Dad’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to Tracy’s Dream or the Sault Ste Marie Humane Society. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758). www.northwoodfuneral.com
