Mom lived by 2 mottos and instilled these in her children. One was “Do unto others as you would want done unto you” and the other was “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Mom was very involved in the community of Echo Bay and surrounding areas. Mom, along with her sister Marilyn started and taught 4-H home economics. Along with other girls in the community, Mom taught all her girls to sew and cook. She even taught the boys to cook so they could fend for themselves if she happened to be busy. Mom belonged to the United Church Women, the Women’s Institute, and the Echo Bay Horticultural Society. She was a founding member of the Echo Bay Crafty Creators which still gathers today. Mom, along with our dad, was an avid Amateur Radio Operator and attended many functions and luncheons with their HAM family. Mom taught many people throughout the local communities to knit and crochet through Adult Night Classes. Mom enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, teaching a great number of them to cook when she could. In later years, she enjoyed visiting with her great-grandchildren.
Mom and Dad celebrated 70 years married prior to dad’s passing in 2021. Mom and Dad loved to travel. Mom didn’t hesitate to go with Dad to live in Panama while Dad worked on the electrical conversion of the Panama Canal. Off she went without any hesitation taking 4 children with her. This started her love for travel and over the years, Mom and Dad visited places like Bermuda and Alaska. They traveled coast to coast in Canada as well. Mom raised 7 children but always had room in her heart and at her table for more. Her keen sense of humor and strong personality will be missed by many.
The family would like to thank the staff on Birch 2 at the F. J. Davey Home for Mom’s care during her time there.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no service at this time as a celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 26, 2025 at Echo Bay Elks Lodge from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. celebrating both Leone and Hugh as we were unable to gather for Hugh due to COVID. It was mom’s wishes that they be celebrated together. Memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to A.R.C.H., the F. J. Davey Home or the United Church of Echo Bay would be appreciated by the family.
