Peacefully at Sault Area Hospital on Sunday, March 2, 2025, in his 77th year. Beloved husband of Cheryl. Brother of the late Alison Chizmar (Paul) of Hadley, Pennsylvania. Brother-in-law of Randy Cote (Linda) and Rochelle Rugo (Stephen). Uncle of Sam, Kevin (Megan), and Jeff Chizmar, Den (Becky) Cote, Nicole Cote, and Christopher, Stephanie, and Michael Rugo.
While an avid player of volleyball and golf, Derek was most passionate about football, having been a loyal Green Bay Packer fan right to the end. Derek began playing football at Bawating and continued playing at Queen’s University as a member of the 1968 Vanier Cup Golden Gaels. He then went on to play for the Sudbury Spartans and finally the Sault Steelers in the Northern Football Conference, where he was proud to be a part of the Steeler’s 1972 NFC Championship team.
In addition to his passion for football, Derek loved to talk (and talk). No matter the time or place, Derek never passed up the chance to tell a story or just chat.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our family and friends for their love, support, and thoughtful check-ins – including the staff, volunteers, and friends we made through the Alzheimer’s Minds in Motion and walking programs.
We’d also like to thank Amy Esposito N.P. of the IDA clinic, the staff at SAH Geriatric Clinic, as well as the doctors and staff of the SAH Emergency Unit for their compassionate care in Derek’s final days.
As per Derek’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
