(May 4, 1929 – October 5, 2017) – It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gus Meier announce his passing in his 88th year. Living out his life on the beautiful Beech Beach, there is nowhere else he would have rather been than watching the sun rise over the lake, bathing him in its warmth and refreshing his soul. He would live nowhere else but in his home with his furry friend, Charlie. Gus and his wife, Anneliese, lived out their own Canadian dream, immigrating to Canada from Germany in the early 1950’s and settling in Sault Ste. Marie to raise their family. He worked at Algoma Steel as a construction electrician until his retirement. A hard worker from a young age, Gus learned independently to create, repair, refashion, restore or make from new. Whether it was electronics, carpentry, engine repair, or projects large and small, Gus seemed to naturally know how to do everything. A manual of some kind was never far from his reach because fixing it was way better than buying a new one. After Anne died in 1998, Gus adjusted well; Anne would have been so surprised that he became such a good cook and baker. Again, his family benefited from his new hobby, sharing his homemade jams, applesauce, maple syrup and suppen gruen. The recipe book was often open to a new recipe to try. Indeed, he was a lifelong learner, curious, interested and willing to try new things. Gus was grateful for the little things in life; he loved us wholeheartedly and we loved him back. He gave much in word and deed, leading by example and being resourceful and generous. He lived peaceably, friendly to all who crossed his path. He will be remembered for his wit, bright blue eyes, big smile and quiet, steady strength. Gus will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Great Opa of 11+. A private family graveside service was held at Tenby Bay Cemetery on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 11 am. Memorial contributions to the Cancer Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. A heartfelt thank you for Gus’ faithful neighbours on Wierzbicki Drive, the support of the St. Joseph Island community, Trefry Centre, volunteer drivers (especially Nicole and Ken), Meals on Wheels volunteers and staff of the Richards Landing Medical Centre, Dr. Lupien, Dr. McLean and Dr. S.
