With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Darlene at ARCH, surrounded by family on December 14, 2024, at the age of 87.

Beloved wife of Sherman McGonegal for 65 years. Loving mother of Daryl (Hilda), Brenda Foley (Jim), Brad (Pam), and Jeff (Dawn). Adoring grandmother of Rebecca, Jonathan, Leslie, Christopher, Bryce, Berlyn, Kyle, and Nicole.

Daughter of the late John and Ottilia Dilschneider. Survived by her sister Donna and predeceased by siblings Kay, Sally, Marie, Pauline, Fred, Martin, Sy, Florence, Del, Dorothy, and Paul. Aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Darlene grew up on the family farm in Holdfast, Saskatchewan and moved to Sault Ste. Marie as a young adult to care for her sister. It was here she met Sherman, the love of her life while skating at the Greenwood Elementary School rink.

Darlene was known for her kind heart, inquisitive nature, and witty sense of humour. She often enjoyed the challenge of a good crossword. She found immense joy tending to her flower and vegetable garden, canning, preparing meals and baking that brought comfort to all, especially with dishes like meat pies, borscht, fried scones and blueberry pies.

Darlene also enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at camp on Wart Lake with family, friends, and her brother Fred. In her young years, she worked for Bell Canada and formed a special friendship with Wilda. She spent many happy times with special friends, Pete and Shirley Smith and Al and Marilyn. She lived a beautiful life and shared special moments in her final days with Christopher, Bryce, and Berlyn.

Above all, Darlene was a devoted wife, mother and very special grandmother. Her family was her greatest love. She will be missed beyond measure.

A special thank you to the staff at ARCH and the Sault Area Hospital for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Dr’s. Fera, Sharpe and Booth who ensured a peaceful, comfortable transition to the end-of-life care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society – SSM & Algoma District or ARCH would be greatly appreciated by the family.
