January 19, 1943 - December 23, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Elwood McCoy at the age of 81, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on December 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with heart disease.

Elwood will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters Marnie Spadoni (Henry) and Tracy McCoy (Phil Greco), grandchildren Shae and Caeden Greco, and sister Gloria Mifflin (Bill).

Elwood is predeceased by his parents Elmer and Ruby "Nellie" McCoy (nee Hatten) and sister Marlene Geidlinger (Kurt).

Known for his huge heart, generosity, kindness and gentle ways, Elwood was a man of few words and many talents. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and neighbours.

Elwood loved to spend time with his grandchildren, Shae and Caeden, spending countless hours building projects for them. He proudly supported them in both figure skating and hockey, always being there for them. He will forever be fondly remembered by them.

Elwood was also an experienced bush pilot, actively involved in building aircraft for himself and others. He had many fond memories of flying to Hudson Bay, and other destinations around Ontario, with his friends in his Piper Super Club.

He loved getting away to his trap line and going hunting at his camp on Grey Owl Lake. He knew many people up that way, becoming something of legend over the years, known for his trapping skills and also rescuing & helping people who lost their way in the bush. He always knew every inch of the area and always helped out. His love of flying brought him there, where over the years he earned the reputation “The Trapper of Grey Owl Lake”.

Elwood was also known for his skills as a welder/ pipe fitter and fabricator during his tenure at Algoma Steel. After retirement, he continued his craft by helping pilots, friends, and family build many projects. He was quick to find solutions to mechanical problems, always making it look easy.

Elwood's family would like to thank all the ICU staff nurses helping him during this most difficult time, as well as Drs. Landry, Ghosh, Difabio, and Curran for their professionalism and direction with his care.

In accordance with Elwood's wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no funeral service.
