With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Noel, a remarkable man whose lasting mark on the world will forever resonate in the lives he touched. Noel departed this world on Monday, December 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. His legacy as an adoring husband, devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, pioneering builder and passionate horse lover will continue to inspire and uplift us all.
Born on September 20, 1934 to parents Alfred and Cecile Mathieu, Noel’s journey through life was characterized by courage, compassion and unyielding determination to follow his own path. Undeterred by challenges of trying times, Noel fearlessly blazed a trail as the owner of Mathieu Bros. Construction, a long-time prominent home builder in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas, as well as High Rail Stables, a well-known horse boarding and training centre. His dedication to helping others, combined with his empathy and unwavering commitment, earned him the respect and admiration of everyone he met.
Outside his noble profession, Noel found immense joy at home, a wonderful husband to his soulmate and dear wife, Yvette, whom he has greatly missed since her passing in 2018. A father to his three beloved children, Anita (Bruce), Ronald (Pat) and Lise (Todd), as well as grandchildren Matthew, Kimberly, Melissa, Rachelle and great-grandchildren Rena, Kiana and Braxton. Noel also leaves behind many siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews who all held a special place in his heart.
Amid his busy life, Noel discovered peace and serenity in the presence of horses. For him, bliss was defined by being ringside, watching his family and friends navigate jump courses or barrel patterns, whether at home by the river or at the numerous horse shows he attended. His passion for these animals reflected his spirit – untamed, free, yet gentle and nurturing.
Noel’s memory will forever be cherished by his children, family, friends, colleagues and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
At Noel’s request, there will be no funeral services. Cremation has taken place and he will be placed, once again, next to his cherished wife to rest. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) or Tracy’s Dream would be appreciated by the family.
We extend our gratitude to all who supported Noel on his journey. Your presence and encouragement meant the world to him. Please raise a glass and listen to a Tex Ritter song in celebration of a life well lived and a man deeply loved.
