Peacefully at the age of 91 (July 3, 1933 – December 28, 2024) in St. Thomas, Ontario, Calvin passed from this world to be reunited for eternity with his wife Hazel. Loving father of Cynthia Barnes (Myles), late Laurie Lamming (late Marlene) and Richard Lamming. Adored grandfather of Bob (Celina), Tammy (Shaun), Michael (Chantalle), Stephanie (Jenson), Gregory (Shauna), Erin, Devin (Melinda), Lori, and Calvin Jr. (Bonnie). Great grandfather of Braydon, Jonathan, Zachary, Lekxie, Malachi, Aceara, Bronwyn, Jacob, Xander, Gavin, Quintin, Blair, Michael, Sarah, Violet, Elianna, Coralynn and Kylo. Great, great grandfather to Kinsley. Son of the late Russel and Mable Lamming, Calvin is survived by his sister Doreen Archibald (late Bill) and was brother to the late Donald Lamming (late Violet), late Howard Lamming (late Lillian), and the late Reginald Lamming (late Betty). Special “Big Brother” to Billy Morin. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Calvin was dedicated in all that he did; in his work, his faith and his volunteer endeavors. In his working years he never shied away from new experiences and continued to expand them in his retirement. He spent many years at Algoma Dairy, owned his own business “Lamming’s Upholstery”, and moved into corrections with the Sault Ste. Marie Jail where he retired. In his retirement he continued upholstering, took on the role of Bylaw Officer for The Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional, started candy-making (Cal’s Chocolates), became skilled in woodworking (building cabinets and turning pens and yo-yos) and worked for Arthur’s Funeral Home as a driver and usher.
Throughout these years Calvin also held the positions of Genealogist, Branch President and Bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Sault Ste. Marie and Central Algoma as well as High Councilor for the Church’s Sudbury Stake. Always a man of service, Calvin was an active member and President of the Sault Ste. Marie Horticulture Society where he was instrumental in the creation of the Memorial Rose Garden in Bellevue Park. As a Master Gardener he enjoyed judging local and regional flower shows. As well, he spent several years volunteering with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie.
Calvin’s legacy of family, hard work and service will never be forgotten. He touched many lives and will be remembered by all who had the privilege to walk alongside him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 1:00 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 126 Caledon St. with Shaun Cyr officiating.
