August 9, 1928 - December 16, 2024
Melba passed away peacefully at the Finnish Resthome (Mauno Kaihla Koti) with her daughter by her side.
Most loving mother of the late Paul and Karen (Mark). Devoted mummo of Liisa (Garrett), Jon Paul, David, and Erik. Predeceased by her husband Vilho, parents Tyyne and Matti Mattila, her stepfather Reino Lahti and her sisters Kyllikki Mattila and Alice Nenonen (late Leo) and her infant son. Survived by her sister Sylvia Alanen (late William). Melba will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews in Canada and Finland.
Melba was a dedicated and passionate business teacher at Lakeway C. & V.S. She left a lasting impression on countless former students, many of whom went on to use their business education in their careers. She thoroughly enjoyed attending the Lakeway Reunion in 2022 and reconnecting with some of those students and former colleagues.
Summers were spent with family at the camp at Sand Bay on Lake Superior. Grandchildren, blueberry picking, beach and scrabble made a perfect camp day.
Melba was proud to be part of the Finnish community in Sault Ste. Marie. She attended several Finnish Grand Festivals and volunteered at the Ontario Finnish Resthome.
The family wishes to thank all of the staff at OFRA (Kotitalo and MKK) for the exceptional, compassionate care she received since moving there at age 89. The staff truly embodies their motto "Homes With A Heart."
Family and friends are invited to a service at Zion Lutheran Church (189 Upton Road, Sault Ste. Marie) on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 11 am with Pastor Brad Mittleholtz officiating.
