Age 74, of Mt. Morris, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Mr. Vernon Lawrence officiating with burial to follow at Flint Memorial Park with graveside military honors by VFW Post #3087. If desired memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Association, envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Family will receive friends Wednesday 5 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday evening family will gather at the funeral home for Masonic Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Frederick was born December 24, 1929 in Flint, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell and Vera (Empey) Helmer. He and Betty Miron were united in marriage November 8, 1952. Fred was a fantastic gardener. Fred served in the U.S. Army 1948-1952, with the First Calvary Division, during the Korean War. Fred received the Purple Heart because he was wounded during combat, and a Silver Star for Bravery. Fred was a 50 year member of Fellowship Lodge #490, Lifetime member of VFW and DAV and 1st Calvary Division Association. He retired from G.M. Truck and Bus in 1987 after 34 years of service. Survivors include: wife Betty of 53 years; 6 children: Fred Jr. and wife Terri Helmer, Lawrence Helmer all of Flint, Susan Baughman of Sarasota, FL., Lisa and husband Hebat Badiee of E. Lansing, Julie and husband Hamilton Lilburn of Sarasota, FL., Irene Helmer of Flint, 2 brothers: Russ and wife Beverly Helmer of Mt. Morris, Robert and wife Louise Helmer of Durand, dear sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Bob Belsito of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Preceaded in death by daughter Christine and grandson Tyler. The family wishes a special thank you to Dr. T. Stevens M.D. and office staff and the staff at Genesys Hospital.
