It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Arthur Heino of Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Sault Area Hospital.

Richard in his 82nd year, passed away peacefully with his great friend and brother Eric by his side.  Richard is survived by his older sister Mary Heino of Thunder Bay, Ontario, brother Eric Heino of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, son Kai Heino, daughter-in-law Young-Hee Heino and grandchildren Kale and Meerahn Heino of Mississauga, Ontario.

Richard grew up on the family farm in Red Rock, Ontario with his parents Frank and Hilda Heino. He attended elementary and high school there, then moving on to Lakehead University and Western University acquiring his BA, and UWO for Teacher’s College. He settled into teaching high school in Chesley, Kitchener and later in Sault Ste. Marie at Sault Collegiate and finally at Sir James Dunn. He was a well known and respected French teacher for nearly 40 years before retiring in 1996.

Mr. Heino was to most known as Coach Heino. He was head coach of the Sir James Dunn track and field team for many years. He coached well into his retirement years.  He was never one to sit still, he strived to  help his athletes achieve great success. Mr. Heino’s teams won countless city and NOSSA track and field championships and sent scores of athletes to the provincial championships. In 2004, Coach Heino was inducted into the Russ Ramsay High School Sports Hall of Fame by Rotary International in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the secondary school athletes of our community. Coach, teacher and friend to many in the community, great father and brother, you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

There will be a private celebration of Richard's Life. Memorial donations made payable by cheque or online to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice in Richard's name would be appreciated by the family.
