Sister Patricia Hassett

(Sister Mary Daniel)

January 12, 1934 –  January 1, 2024

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie wish to announce that Sister Patricia Hassett transitioned peacefully into the heart of God on January 1, 2024.  Sister Pat was born in Sudbury, ON to Mae Lineham & Michael Hassett (both deceased), the fifth of six children.  She is survived by her sisters, Sister Glenna Hassett and Connie Bonhomme and predeceased by her siblings Mary Tessier, Shirley Bushey and Michael Hassett.

Patricia received her education at St. David’s School, Sudbury and St. Joseph’s College and St. Mary’s Academy, North Bay.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie, from Holy Trinity Parish, Sudbury on September 2, 1955 making Final Profession August 15, 1963.

Sister Patricia’s ministry experiences began with teaching (1957-1963) serving at St. Joseph’s School, Blind River, St. Mary’s School, Hawk Junction and
St. Mark’s School, Sault Ste. Marie.  She then taught for two years at St. Cecilia’s School, Nassau, Bahamas before returning to her Northern Ontario roots joining the clerical team at Marymount College, Sudbury, followed by a position in the Admitting Department of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Little Current, ON.

Sister found her true love and passion serving with the Jesuit Indigenous Mission Team, 1971-1986, in Wikwemikong, Little Current, West Bay and Sagamok.

She enjoyed a sabbatical year at Galilee Renewal Centre, Arnprior prior to enrolling in Native Child and Family Worker Studies at Cambrian College, Sudbury.  This led to Pastoral Care work with Indigenous community members.

From 1991-2001, Pat joined her long-time colleague and friend, Sister Dorothy Regan in serving with the Jesuits and Indigenous staff at the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre, Espanola.  Parish ministry, working with children and serving as ‘hostess’ at the Spirituality Centre found her welcoming all with her warm, engaging smile.  She spoke often of the joy this experience was for her.

Sister Patricia moved to St. Joseph’s residence, Sudbury, in 2001.  Patricia served as a Volunteer at St. Joseph’s Villa, Sudbury where her ministry of prayer, joy and care for others was gift for residents and staff.

With declining health, Sister Pat retired to the Motherhouse in 2018, where her spirit, kindness and radiant smile continued to give witness of her love and care for others to all she encountered.

Sister Patricia will be received at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024 with a Prayer Vigil at 4:00 p.m.  Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, Sacred Heart Chapel on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 beginning with closing prayers at 10:50 a.m. followed by Liturgy at 11:00 a.m.
