March 1, 1924 - July 30, 2024

On a beautiful day at her beloved Upper Island Lake, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, our cherished mother entered the Gates of Heaven. Rita was the ultimate matriarch; family meant everything to her, and she had a way of bringing and keeping family together. We have been greatly blessed by her love, support, and guidance throughout the years.

She was the devoted wife of the late James Hammond, with whom she shared 6 lovely children: the late Mary Teresa, Cathy McCullough (James Egan), Jim (Lesley), the late Lori Davies (Phil), Ann Marie Hammond Fabbro (Jamie) and the late Kevin. Despite the profound heartbreaking losses of three of her children, her faith held her steadfast as she awaited a joyful reunion with them in Heaven.

Rita was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren: Christopher (McCullough), Caitlin (Castellani), Taylor, Sarah, Jon (Hammond), Sydney, Mitchel, Andrew (Davies), Jamie, Jessica (Fabbro), Katie, and April (Hammond). She took immense joy in her role as a great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren: Hudson, Lucy, Oliver, Wilder, and Rowan.

She had a century of summers of great joy, laughter and family happy hours on the dock with us at Upper Island Lake. She always shared great joy wherever our feet would take us. Rita was an exceptional parent, and we were so fortunate to have her unwavering support. Family was everything to her.

Born to Henry Baum and Nora (Weigle), Rita was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Lemay (Cyril), and her brother, Harry (Betty).

Rita dedicated many years to teaching with the Huron Separate School Board. Many former students would often stop to say hello and express their gratitude for her impact as their teacher. She was a strong advocate for following academic pursuits and encouraged us all.

A devout and religious woman, prayer was central to Rita's daily life. She was a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League, serving for over 50 years.

Today, she is at peace and in the comfort of the Lord.

Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church (211 Pentagon Blvd, SSM) on Saturday August 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Charles Abiamiri officiating. Rita will be laid to rest following Mass at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. A tribute reception in the parish hall will begin at 12:00 pm, where we invite you to join us in celebrating her life.

Rita lived her life in kindness so please consider, in lieu of flowers and memorial donations, passing on a good deed in her honour.

Special thanks to Dr. Sarah White, Dr. Gayle Yee and her special grandson in law Dr. Lucas Castellani for all the support, love and compassion.
