It is with immense sadness that the family of Sandra Leigh Haines announces her passing on November 6, 2023, at the Sault Area Hospital.

Sandy is predeceased by her beloved parents Oliver and Peggy Thurston, her best friend Bill Edwards, her late husband John Haines, her cousins Jim & Rob Fuller as well as her granddaughter Jamie Albury.  She is survived by her daughter Becky Strom, sisters Beth Keller and Janice Hewer, niece Tracey Keller-Bennett, and grand nieces Mackenzie, Margaret Keller-Bennett and Samantha Bennett.  Sandy was step-mother to Shaughn & Tracey Haines, Shelley Neufeld, Joel and Andrew Edwards. Sandy was a grandmother to: Jennifer & Heather Haines, JD Albury, Alexandra Jackson, Ashton, Blake and Danya Neufeld and Kaiden & Quinn Edwards.  Sandy leaves behind cousins Jill Fuller, Laurie and Meredith Barbeau, and Jack Fuller. Sandra is likewise remembered fondly by her close friends Susie Linklater, Marion Predum, Mary-Lynn Matheson, Kim McMullin Christenson, and all of her friends at the Legion.

Sandy graduated from the legal clerical program at Sault College in 1992, and worked as a scheduler at Algoma Steel for her career until her retirement. Sandy was remembered as an outstanding cook (“but stay out of my kitchen!”), a generous friend, and a lover of animals.  Sandra leaves behind her 6-year-old Husky, Meetchum, who misses her dearly and is now looking for a new forever home. Sandra’s kitchen table on Wemyss Street was a frequent gathering place for family and friends, whom she served with pride, but was quick to rebuke when the subject turned to politics.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25, 450 Albert St. W., P6A 1C3 Sault Ste. Marie or by e-transfer rclbranch25 @gmail.com. Sandra’s father, Oliver, was a veteran of World War Two, and he was often remembered fondly there.  A Celebration of Life for Sandra will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Sunday November 12, 2023, from 1-4pm. Arrangements entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James St., 705-759-8456, www.osullivanfuneralhome.com).
