It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. David Harding Gould announce his passing at Extendicare Mapleview on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
Beloved husband of the late Margaret Day Gould (nee Howard) and cherished father of James (Anne), Carolyn Evoy (Richard) and John (Dianne). Proud grandfather of Megan Groot (Derek) and Tyler Evoy, Patricia (fiance Eric) and David Gould and Rudie Gould (fiance Marcus). Loving great-grandfather of Evie Groot.
David was born and raised in Montreal where he met and married the love of his life, Margaret. After doing his residency and internship in the United States, David and Margaret moved to Sault Ste. Marie with their three young children. They made a beautiful life here, embracing their church, enjoying a fulfilling career, participating in the musical community and raising a family.
David received many awards and recognition for his tireless contributions to the Sault Area Hospital and the cardiac programs he championed. As Chief of Staff at the Plummer Hospital David was respected by his colleagues while many patients have commented on his kind and gentle bedside manner.
Music was as vital to David as was breathing. For 57 years he sang in the St. Luke’s Cathedral choir with his perfect pitch tenor. He also sang in many other choirs and even enjoyed acting in community theatre productions with his children.
David’s faith guided him from an early age and sustained him through his life. After earning a diploma in Theology from Thornloe University, David became a lay minister at St. Luke’s Cathedral. He attended many General Synods as a delegate, helped write the Book of Alternative Services and was a warden for many years. David was awarded the Anglican Award of Merit, the highest honour bestowed by the Anglican Church of Canada.
Although Alzheimer’s robbed us of the man we knew growing up, our dad will live on in his children and grandchildren’s love of music, reading, computer games and science fiction movies.
Rich and Carolyn would like to thank the wonderful staff at Mapleview, Lake Superior unit for the kind, compassionate care they gave David these past 17 months. We truly believe you are all angels disguised as health care professionals. We would like to especially thank Dr. Sarah White as well as David’s nurse, Christina. Also special thanks to Janice McCoy for the weekly visits.
