It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Alan Fraser on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the age of 72. He was the husband and best friend of Bev Fraser (nee Olive) for over forty years. Proud father of Melissa Slade (Steve) and Carly Fraser (Brandon). He will be immensely missed and fondly remembered as Papa by his two granddaughters Emma and Kate Slade and his grandpup Dakota.
He will be missed by his siblings Sheila Patterson (Bobby), Alison Smith (Alan), Ian (Sabrina), and Fiona Rouse (Brian) as well as his in-laws Jimmy Olive (Sharon), Randee Olive (late Colette), late Roseanna MacGillivary, Ted Olive (Rae), Teresa Belanger, Michael Olive (Susan), and Bill Olive (Dot).
He was known as Uncle Al to his many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him joining in on any activity or game (often while chuckling to himself), listening intently to a story while slapping his leg and saying, “get out”, or cheerfully yelling “get out of my yard” whenever anyone showed up for a visit.
Alan loved his family, his friends, and sports and if you were lucky enough to fall into the category of family or friends you know that he loved unconditionally and showed up consistently. If you had the privilege of playing or coaching with or against Alan on the rink, soccer field, or golf course you know that he was all heart. He was a team player both inside and outside of sports and was always up for a chat, making going anywhere with Alan an all-day affair as he was sure to run into at least a few people he knew.
Some of his favourite memories, outside of sports, were of the family camping adventures with the “Brimley” gang. Touring through Michigan, one trailer after another, Alan could often be found laughing over the CB as the gang navigated the highways. He loved playing Euchre but be prepared, if you played with Al, he called on everything (even when he had nothing) and would be known to hold back a card or two if he thought he could get away with it.
Alzheimer's is an awful disease and we’re so grateful for the love and support that Alan (and family) were shown by so many incredible people at the VON, the Algoma Alzheimer’s Society and the associated Adult Day Program. We can’t say enough positive things about these programs as well as the amazing staff on the 4th Floor Harmony Bay at Extendicare Mapleview. We would love to have individually named each and every one of you but there are just too many people who loved and supported us all throughout this journey. Thank you.
A special thank you to Mickey Dacey who has always been a wonderful care provider to Alan and, over time, has become a wonderful friend to both Bev and Alan as well as Johnnie Tibbles who was always there to help and support when needed. As well, to both Dr. Lane and Dr. White for providing ongoing medical support with care and compassion.
As per Alan’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private burial and family gathering will take place at a later date. Donations (payable online or by cheque) can be made to the Adult Day Program at the Algoma Alzheimer's Society.
As Alan would often say, “thanks for coming to my party...”
