Passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, just three days after his 55th birthday. Survived by his long-time partner, Rhonda Cooper. Dear son of Mary and the late Albert Simon. Cherished brother of Andrea, Norma, Lisa, Kimberly and Alvin, as well as his cousin Annie who was like a sister to him. He was a very special uncle to all of his nieces and nephews, especially Alvin’s children Paige and Austin, who Michael helped raise when they were young. He will be fondly remembered by his best friends Rick and Mike.
Michael was born on February 1, 1970 in Geraldton, Ontario. As a young boy, the family moved to the Sault where Michael attended St. John’s Elementary, Bawating Secondary and became a Sault College graduate. Being a member of Eabametoong First Nation, he carried great pride in his indigenous identity. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent a great deal of time hunting and fishing with family and friends. Michael always carried a smile and jokes with him, even while working. He was a cherished employee at the SSM Habitat for Humanity ReStore since 2015. Michael had a big heart with him, always taking care of the people around him. Whether it was his grandparents, his own parents, siblings or their children, Michael always put others before himself. Family was very important to him. He always said, “patience is a virtue” to his niece Paige.
At Michael’s request, no services will be held. Memorial donations to the SAH Cancer Care Fund would be appreciated by the family. Miigwech, thank you to all the staff at the SAH Emergency Department, the Palliative Care team and to our Indigenous System Navigator team for the care and compassion shown to our family. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758). www.northwoodfuneral.com
