BLOMFIELD, Nancy Marguerite

 (1917 – 2017) - Nancy passed away peacefully on October 12 in her 101st year at the F. J. Davey Home in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. She was predeceased by her sisters Josephine Blomfield in Vancouver and Mary Petherick in England. She is survived by her niece Gillian Trowbridge, nephew Mark Petherick (Rosie), nephew-in-law David Trowbridge, great nieces Poppy, Joslyn, Anna and Sarah, and great nephew Thomas. Nancy was born near Colchester, England on July 26 1917 and lived there until the beginning of the Second World War when she enlisted in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). After training in the U.K. she was posted to Egypt where she remained for the duration of the war. This experience fueled her sense of adventure and love of travel so she then accepted a job in Kenya, lived there for several years and traveled through many parts of Africa. Upon her return to the UK she promptly moved to Toronto and worked for the CBC for a short while. City life was 'not her cup of tea' so she accepted a position as secretary at Steep Rock Iron Mines in 'remote' Atikokan in Northern Ontario where she remained until her retirement. She loved the outdoor life there, bought a canoe, fished in the nearby lakes and stayed with friends in lakeside camps. She also gave many years of service to the Church of the Good Shepherd. Every few years she would drive to Stratford to see several plays, visiting her niece's family near Echo Bay en route. When Nancy retired she moved to Echo Bay and lived in a house trailer. At the age of 70 she sold the trailer and had a house built on her property. She enjoyed being part of her niece's family in Canada and visiting her nephew's family in England. She continued to travel yearly during her retirement and visited countries all over the world. Nancy lived in her house in Echo Bay until she was 98. She walked every day to the post office and during her last years due to her failing eyesight was always helped across the road by the residents of Echo Bay and the township office staff. Nancy spent the last two years of her life at the Davey Home on the second level, Driftwood Beach and we are grateful for the care she received from all the staff. Thanks must go to many people who helped Nancy through her final years. A special thank you goes to David and his partner Nancy Logan and many thanks also to Janet Findlay, Bill Weir, and Mike Greene and Jean Lidstone. A small celebration of Nancy's life for relatives, friends and neighbours will be held on Thursday October 19 from 4pm to 6pm at her house in Echo Bay.
