Passed peacefully at Extendicare Maple View on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the age of 66. 

Loving, cherished wife and best friend of Alfred. Wonderful, caring mother of Christopher (Kelly) Mercer, Benjamin (Christina Villeneuve) Mercer, Vincent (Holly Cunningham) Aquilina and Dominic (Christina Ajithkumar) Aquilina.  Cherished grandmother of William Mercer; Cole, Samantha, Kate and Addison Mercer and Lyra Aquilina. Dear sister of Vince (Marina) McCarthy, Terry (Anthony) McCleavy, Mary (Leonard) Mandville, Anna Powell, Jamie (Kathryn) McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Agnes McCarthy, Steven McCarthy and the late Peter McCarthy. Sister-in-law of Pauline (Greg) Spencer. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Mercedes was beautiful and creative. She was an award-winning creator of original stained glass pieces.  She had an angelic soprano voice and sang in the Precious Blood Cathedral Choir for more than 25 years and more recently, Holy Family Choir. Mercedes excelled at the game of scrabble and at almost anything she decided to do. She played guitar and sang with Alfred, both church and favourite folk music at every opportunity.

A private family celebration of life was held at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East; 705-759-2522) on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, St. John's Newfoundland. The family would appreciate any memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) be directed to Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District.
