April 5, 1947 - December 30, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Manuel Joaquim (Jack) Alves on December 30, 2024, at his home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Born on April 5th, 1947, in São Mamede do Coronado, Portugal. Joaquim shared an extraordinary 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Emilia Alves. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, faith, and unshakable support. He was a proud and dedicated father to Maggie Catterick (Jordy) and Ticha Overholt (Brian), instilling in them a sense of compassion, strength, and joy that they continue to carry forward. His grandchildren, Jacob and Lucas Catterick, and Liam and Owen Overholt, were his greatest pride and joy. He relished every moment spent as their Vuvu, whether cheering at their milestones, offering encouragement, advice, or simply sharing stories and smiles. Joaquim is predeceased by his parents, Augusto and Albina Alves and siblings Otilia, Manuel Antonio, Fernanda, Justa and will be incredibly missed by the Santos and Alves families.
Joaquim’s life was marked by his strong work ethic, his enduring kindness and his deep love for family. As a young man, he emigrated from Portugal, bringing with him the values and traditions that would shape his life and legacy. Joaquim’s love for the Portuguese community in Sault Ste. Marie was unmatched as he enjoyed countless family and community events over the years at the Portuguese-Canadian club. These valued friendships became part of his extended family. His career at Steel Speed working alongside great friends was one of hard work and dedication. Joaquim also had a passion for soccer, specifically the Portuguese National Team, the Benfica Football Club, and many local Sault teams as a player and coach.
Joaquim’s final days were a testament to the fullness of his life, surrounded by the love of family and friends during the Christmas season. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering love will remain forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
The family would like to thank all those who have offered their condolences and support during this time. A Memorial Mass celebrating Joaquim’s life will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie at 11:00am. A reception at the Portuguese-Canadian Association of Sault Ste. Marie will be held at 1:30pm the same day.
