The children of Margaret Anne Algie, 97, regret to announce her recent passing. She died at her Sault Ste. Marie home, as was her wish, following complications from congestive heart failure.  The youngest among three children of George Hector MacQuarrie and Mildred MacQuarrie, nee Blain, Anne was born August 18, 1925 in Moncton, New Brunswick.  She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth of Oakville, Ont. and brother Dr. Bill MacQuarrie of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Anne received her formal education at Moncton High School where she met her future husband, the late Gordon Haig Algie, a physician and radiologist who practiced medicine in New Brunswick, Montreal but most significantly in Sault Ste. Marie, where they moved in 1954, and continuing until his retirement in 1987.

Anne and Gordie celebrated a happy marriage of 58 years until his untimely death in 2005. Anne is survived by her four children, all of whom were present at her home at the time of her peaceful death. We wish to express our gratitude for medical care by mother's family physicians: Dr. W. Grosso, Dr. J. D. Curran and Dr. Peter Apostle and, most recently, for the palliative care under the supervision of Dr. Karen Booth and attending nurses at home with careful additional attention from her son, Dr. Bob.

Anne's children are: Jim Algie (Maggie) of Owen Sound, Ont.; Heather Bailey (John) of Montreal, Quebec; Bob Algie (Janet) of Fort Frances, Ont.; and Bill (Barbara) of Somerdale, New Jersey. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Anne was, until recently, an active member of St. Andrew's United Church. She was a former board member and chair of the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA and a board member of the Royal Ontario Museum.

Anne maintained a busy social and neighbourhood life in Sault Ste. Marie and in the Caribbean island nation of Montserrat where she and Gordie maintained a home for more than 50 years. She was an avid bridge player with a deep interest in food and cooking. She remained an active cottage resident of St. Joseph Island and encouraged and supported a long tradition of family cottage vacations until very recently when her failing health began to impose limits on activities beyond her home.  As a family we remain deeply indebted to the careful help provided to Mom over many years by her very resourceful and helpful caregiver and friend Jeannine.

Mother loved a party. A celebration of Anne's life is to be held at a place and date to be announced.

Soon after she died, at about mid-day, October 29, 2022 those present and her close neighbours, Rob and Sue Cote, gathered for a Maritime rum toast to Anne in the words she used often herself on special occasions: "Here's looking toward you, never seed ya, never met ya, never knowed ya; but here's to you as good as you are and here's to me as bad as I am; but as good as you are and as bad as I am, I'm as good as you are and as bad as I am."

Cheers, Mum.
