Glasgow Rangers say Benfica has pulled out of planned game in Hamilton

TORONTO — Glasgow Rangers says its Oct. 6 match against Portugal's Benfica at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton has been cancelled.

A statement on the Scottish club's website said Benfica had cancelled the Eusebio Cup game in Canada "and Rangers are still waiting for an explanation."

Rangers were due to leave Tuesday for Canada "but were informed of Benfica's decision only hours ago," the team said on its website Saturday.

Rangers said game organizer Elite Soccer Entertainment had apologized.

The Scottish club added it "will take legal advice before commenting further."

The game was still being advertised Saturday afternoon on the Tim Hortons Field website.
