Wahpeton Dakota Nation man remains in custody on second-degree, assault, sexual assault murder charges

A Wahpeton Dakota Nation man made another court appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court March 10. 

Nathan Waditaka is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Zellall Highway. He is also charged with sexual assault and aggravated assault of a 17-year-old girl. 

According to Prince Albert RCMP, they were called to the Wahpeton Dakota Nation Health Centre just after midnight on Dec. 26, 2019, about a complaint of a girl who was assaulted. 

Police then went to a home on Wahpeton Dakota Nation where the assault happened. At that residence, police found Highway alive, but suffering from life-threatening injuries. Police took him to the local clinic where EMS pronounced him deceased. 

The 17-year-old girl was taken by EMS to the hospital in Prince Albert. 

Waditaka was identified as the suspect and police arrested him at a nearby residence. Waditaka also had injuries and EMS took him to a Prince Albert hospital. 

Waditaka reappears in court March 19 to speak to his charges.
