Ellie Love, office manager at ARCH Hospice, a charitable organization that provides quality, compassionate care through end-of-life, was invited by the Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild to attend our February meeting and receive a special gift and a cash donation.

Jennifer Freiburger chose ARCH as her charity of choice and spearheaded this wonderful community project.

“My father stayed at ARCH a few years back and everyone there was absolutely wonderful,” said Freiburger, a retired nurse who understands the importance of end of life care for patients and their family.

Her first project involved creating a new ceremonial quilt which can be used to respect the privacy and dignity of a deceased resident. Freiburger recruited several guild members to piece dragon fly blocks with coordinating fabrics she chose and then arranged the blocks, added some borders and provided the long-arm quilting services to complete the new ceremonial quilt.

It was presented to Arch on Feb. 24.

“The quilt is stunning,” said Love, who received the gift on behalf of Arch.

Freiburger also presented ARCH with a cash donation of $300.

"We are very grateful for the wonderful support that the guild has provided us and continues to provide us," Love said.

"We have to raise $850,000 annually over and above the government funding they receive in order to operate the Hospice as a free service to all families in the Algoma district.”

The guild’s generosity won’t end there as Freiburger is currently working on another initiative with the guild to supply ARCH with 12 dragon fly bed runners to decorate the resident’s rooms and help to provide a welcoming environment for new residents.
