NEWS RELEASE
UNITED WAY SAULT STE. MARIE AND ALGOMA DISTRICT
*************************
In true community-minded fashion, McDougall Energy Inc. and Imperial’s Esso Community Program partnered up to support the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District to help fuel trucks and move much needed food donations between the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Sault Ste. Marie.
Lock City Dairies of Sault Ste. Marie has also generously contributed to the transportation expenses required to pick up the food. These donations will help cover the cost of the large transport trucks travelling to pick up food donated by Second Harvest, a food rescue organization based in Toronto.
Gary Vipond, CEO, United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District stated that “the assistance of McDougall Energy is greatly appreciated as the goal for the year was to bring in six transport loads of food. With the increased demand for food resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Lock City Dairies has brought in 14 truckloads in three months. We did not plan for this volume in our budget process and funds to pay delivery charges are tight. Our community is blessed with great community minded organizations like McDougall Energy and Lock City Dairies.”
Food products transported and received by United Way’s Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre range from fresh produce to non-perishables, dairy products, and proteins – all items that are expensive to purchase and are not typically on food bank shelves.
The relationship building with organizations like Second Harvest and support from local businesses like Lock City and McDougall Energy make initiatives like the United Way Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre possible.
