ECHO BAY -- The goaltenders shared the spotlight in week seven of Women's Hockey League action Monday night as Catherine Schryer, Joanne Pine and Carey Johnson stole the show in leading their teams on to victory.
In the night's opener, the return of goaltender Carey Johnson sparked Investors Group to a 7-0 win over Lafarge. The shutout was Johnson's second of the season. Debbie Beauchamp scored a hat trick and Ellen MacDougall had two and added one assist for Investors. Cassidy Boudreau had one goal and two assists, Patti Lutz a goal and an assist, while Andrea Scornaienchi and Lisa O'Connor had two assists each.
Source for Sports goaltender, Catherine Schryer, finally savoured a shut out win in a thrilling 1-0 victory over Crawford's Canines. Schryer, who has had shutouts slip away in her two previous games, was unbeatable on a night that she had to be. Source for Sports managed only one goal in a tight-checking game with the Canines. Jenny Sayers scored the winner halfway through the first period.
Algoma Insurance salvaged a 4-3 win over Play It Again Sports, thanks to the goaltending of Joanne Pine. Pine was outstanding, fending off several breakaways and goalmouth scrambles to preserve the win. Teammate Mona Jones was equally up to the task, scoring a hat trick, including the game winner. Theresa Glover had Algoma's other goal. Julianna Adam and pick-up-player Karen Bell each had two assists. Kathy Pinkse scored one goal and added one assist for Play It Again. Gayle Trivers and Lisa Rowlinson had the other goals.
