Espanola Paper Kings netminder James Meredith was credited with stopping all 30 shots he faced to post his second shutout of the season, in a 2-0 road win versus the Soo Thunderbirds, Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at John Rhodes Community Centre.
Neither side would convert offensively in a scoreless opening frame as the clubs went to their respective dressing rooms for the first intermission still knotted at 0-0.
In the second stanza, Espanola broke the deadlock during a man advantage when Jack Anderson took a cross-ice feed from Graydon Guthrie and blasted in a one-timer from the left side of Sault Ste. Marie goaltender Lincoln Mellenthin at 5:38.
Remaining 1-0 Paper Kings late into the third period, they capped off the result in the final minute when Lucas Dubois hammered one into an empty net to round out the scoring.
With the victory, Espanola improves to 10-18-2-1 on the campaign, and in defeat, the Soo slips to 13-17-1-2.
