Thunderbirds open road trip with loss

The Soo Thunderbirds gave up a pair of goals in the third period in a loss to the Hearst Lumberjacks

A three-game Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League road trip opened for the Soo Thunderbirds on Friday night in a rematch of last seasons league final.

 

A pair of goals in the third period were the difference as the Soo Thunderbirds dropped a 4-2 decision to the Hearst Lumberjacks.

Jordyn Mughal scored a shorthanded goal 6:47 into the third period to break a 2-2 tie for the Lumberjacks and David Gobeil sealed the win by scoring into an empty Sault net with 1:36 to go.

Gobeil finished the day with a goal and two assists.

Dominic Dumas and Max Griffioen also scored for Hearst.

Goaltender Liam Oxner made 29 saves for the Lumberjacks, who improve to 5-1-0-0.

Orrin Grangroth and Tristan Cicchello scored for the Thunderbirds while goaltender Colin Ahern stopped 22 shots.

The Thunderbirds fall to 3-4-0-1 with the loss. The team will continue it’s three-game road trip on Saturday night in Cochrane against the Crunch.
