Thunderbirds grab key points against Eagles

In a battle in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s West Division standings, the Soo Thunderbirds picked up a pair of valuable points on Saturday night on home ice.

The Thunderbirds rode a solid goaltending performance from Dakota Meyer and a pair of second period goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Soo (Mich.) Eagles Saturday at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Meyer finished the night with 35 saves, including 29 over the final two periods.

After posting two goals and an assist in his debut with the Thunderbirds on Wednesday night in a win over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians, Rylan Clemons picked up a pair of assists in Saturday’s win.

Avery Rebek, Brock Santa Maria, Warner Young, and Tyler Savard scored for the Thunderbirds.

Dominic Skrelja had the lone goal for the Eagles.

Eagles goaltender Shane Brancato made 34 saves.

The win moves the Thunderbirds one point ahead of the Eagles in the West Division standings with a 17-12-1-3 record and 38 points. The Eagles record drops to 17-13-1-2.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Sunday night with a home game against the Elliot Lake Wildcats. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.
