It was the only loss the team suffered all weekend, but it came at a tough time.

Competing in the Ashley Homestore Curling Classic, a World Curling Tour event, in Penticton, BC, Brad Jacobs and his team from Sault Ste. Marie dropped a 6-3 decision to Bruce Mouat of Edinburgh, Scotland late Sunday night in quarterfinal action at the four-day event.

The Jacobs rink, which includes third Marc Kennedy, second E.J. Harnden, and lead Ryan Harnden, advanced to the playoff round thanks to an unbeaten record in the round robin, but couldn’t top Mouat, who was playing his fourth game of the day in the quarters.

Mouat jumped out to an early lead by stealing a pair in the opening end.

After Jacobs picked up a single in the second, Mouat proceeded to blank the third end before scoring a single in the fourth.

Jacobs tied the game with a pair in the fifth end.

After blanking the sixth end, Mouat scored three in the seventh to pick up the win.

Jacobs advanced to the playoff round thanks to a 5-0 record in round robin action.

The Jacobs rink wrapped up the round robin on Sunday with an 8-2 win in four ends over Neil Dangerfield of Victoria, BC.

After Dangerfield took a 1-0 lead with the hammer in the opening end, Jacobs took control of the game with six in the second end.

Dangerfield made it 6-2 with a single in the third before Jacobs wrapped up the game with a pair in the fourth end.

Mouat took the long road to the quarterfinal, needing a pair of tiebreaker wins to get in.

Mouat beat Saskatoon’s Kirk Muyres 6-1 in four ends in the first round of tiebreakers before earning his playoff spot with a 3-2 win over Calgary’s Kevin Koe in the second round of tiebreakers.

The early tiebreaker was the second meeting of the day between Mouat and Muyres after the two met in the morning draw to wrap up their round robin schedules. Muyres beat Mouat in that matchup by a 9-8 score.

Mouat moves on to face Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen in semifinal action on Monday.

The other semifinal will see Ross Whyte of Scotland take on Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher.
