The Soo Thunderbirds fell victim to a mauling by a pack of Northern Wolves on Friday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Scoring the game's first five goals, the Sudbury Northern Wolves held on for an 8-3 win in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Sudbury led 3-0 after one period and 7-1 after two.

Nick Heins, Brian McGarry and Josh Slobodian scored two goals each to lead the Wolves while Gerome Guidice and Jordan Prevost added singles.

Michael Quesnele scored twice on the power play for the Thunderbirds while Kyle Rodgers added another with the man advantage. Quesnele and Rodgers also chipped in an assist each.

Travis O'Brien made the start in goal for the Soo, who outshot the Wolves 27-26, but was pulled in favour of Michael Maulucci 1:55 into the second period after Sudbury's fifth goal.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Saturday at Rhodes against the North Bay Skyhawks beginning at 7:30 p.m.
