After being postponed on Friday due to bad weather and field conditions, the senior football championship is in the books and the Superior Heights Steelhawks made it a sweep.
The Steelhawks scored a 17-10 victory over the St. Basil Saints on Tuesday night at Rocky DiPietro Field to win the senior football title. The win came after the Superior Heights junior team blanked St. Basil 35-0 in the junior final on Saturday afternoon.
St. Basil jumped out to a first quarter lead when quarterback Mitch Mazzuca ran the ball in from a yard out to give the Saints an early 7-0 lead.
Superior Heights got on the board in the second quarter when Cam Elgie caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Elgie to send the game to halftime tied at seven.
Stevan Hiiemaa put the Steelhawks ahead to stay with a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Kickers Brady Smith of Superior Heights and Joe Medaglia traded fourth-quarter field goals to round out the scoring. Smith hit a 28-ard field goal while Medaglia converted from 13-yards out.
The game nearly found its way to overtime when, on the final play of the fourth quarter, St. Basil got into the end zone , only to have their touchdown called back as the Saints were charged with having too many players on the field. The flag ended the game, and the Saints chances of a city title.
Hiiemaa finished the day with 186 yards rushing on 34 carries in being named the championship game MVP.
David Toppan had 44 yard receiving for the Saints on nine catches in the loss. Mazzuca had 50 yard rushing on 16 carries.
Defensively, Eric Thornton had five tackles for Superior Heights in the win. For St. Basil, Billy McPhee and Dominic Gervasi had seven tackles each.
Superior Heights now advances to the NOSSA final in two weeks when they will face the winner of the NOSSA semi-final, set for this weekend between the city champions from Sudbury and North Bay.
