SSMAC SWIMMERS IN FAST LANE IN SUDBURY

A 24-member contingent of the Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club enjoyed a successful weekend at the NEOR Huronia Long Course Championships in Sudbury.

SSMAC swimmers were competing against athletes from across the Northeast region.

In the Senior Championship portion of the meet, Wendy Oleskiw, age 15, led the way with a gold medal performance in the 50-metre freestyle event. Oleskiw placed third in the 100-metre freestyle.

Peter Olinger, age 17, captured fourth place in the 400-metre individual medley.

Oleskiw and Olinger also swam in the "A" Championship Division, finding success there as well. Oleskiw earned a second gold, with a winning race in the 50-metre freestyle, and placed third in another. Olinger earned four top-eight finishes.

Also competing in the "A" Division was Julia Turgeon, age 12. Turgeon was strong and steady with four medal winning swims, including a gold in the 400-metre individual medley. Turgeon has now qualified to compete at the Long Course Junior Provincials in Ottawa in July.

Erin Lee, swimming in the girls' 10 and under age category, placed fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke. Steven Lee, age 10, earned top spot in the 100-metre breaststroke and had three other top-eight finishes.

Brian Lee, Provincial and National qualifier, won gold in three races and took home silver in three others.

Sarah Theodossiou, age 13, finished fourth in the 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle events, and had two sixth place results, while Patrick Bonne competing in the boys'14-15 age category, found seventh in the 800-metre freestyle.

Josh Lawrence (boys' 14-15 age category) secured a bronze medal in the 800-metre freestyle race, and placed fifth in the 400-metre individual medley.

Alex Bonne (boys' 16 and over) was consistent with four top-eight swims.

In "B" Championship action, Chenoa Darlene Naylor won her first gold medal in the girls' 9-10 100-metre backstroke. Naylor had four other top-eight finishes. Bianca Albidone, age 10, placed seventh in the 50-metre breaststroke and eighth in the 50-metre backstroke.

Erinn Theodossiou competing in the girls' 9-10 age division, finished with three sixth place results.

Brendan Wilton (boys' 10-11 age division) finished first in the 100-metre breaststroke and third in two others, while teammate Shane Rock earned a bronze medal in the 100-metre freestyle.

Claire McCarthy, age 11, placed sixth in the 50-metre breaststroke. Kailee Valois competing in the same division, earned sixth in the 50-metre butterfly.

Michael Lawrence, age 12, had four top-eight placements, including a fourth in the 200-metre freestyle.

Elyse McCarthy, 14, won a bronze medal in the 50-metre breaststroke, and placed fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke.
