Three locals are in the running for the H.P. Broughton Award, symbolic of Sault Ste. Marie's Sportsperson of the Year, which will be awarded tonight during the 50th Annual Rotary Sports Award Dinner at the Marconi Club.

Soo North Stars head coach Mike Hall along with alpine skier Brigitte Acton and nordic skier Adam Kates are nominees for the prestigious award.

Acton is in the running for her second Broughton Award, having previously claimed the honour in 2003.

Hall led the North Stars to their third straight Great North Midget League regular season and playoff championships before capturing a bronze medal at the regional championships in North Bay.

Acton represented Canada for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games this past February and placed 10th, 11th and 17th in the combined, slalom and giant slalom events, respectively.

Kates, meanwhile, captured a national championship at the Canadian Senior Men's Cross-Country Ski Championships in March by finishing third in the 10K classic, 15K freestyle and sprint along with a 5th place finish in the 50K classic.

The male high school athletes will also dominate the stage tonight as several awards will be handed out including the athlete of the year and individual sport winners.

Nominees for the male high school athlete of the year are Mike Storozuk (Bawating), Riley King (Korah), Ian Connell (Sir James Dunn), Mike Wozny (St. Basil), Pat Murray (St. Mary's) and Alanzo Clarke (White Pines).
