Facing one of the top seeds in the tournament, Sault College’s women’s hockey team had their 2022 American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championship run ended on Thursday afternoon.

Facing Assiniboine Community College to conclude round robin action, Sault College dropped a 3-1 decision to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record.

The top team in each of the four pools advance to semifinal action on Friday and Thursday’s game was a battle for a semifinal spot after both teams entered the game with 2-0 records.

The teams traded quick goals midway through the opening period to get the scoring started.

Assiniboine’s Simone Turner-Commer picked up her fourth goal of the tournament at 11:05 of the period when she deflected a point shot by Aidan Roberts past Sault College goaltender Gabriella Corbiere to open the scoring.

Just 15 seconds later, Jaydin Zack got the puck in the Sault College zone and hit Erika Beitz with a stretch pass to send the Sault College forward in alone and she beat Assiniboine goaltender Megan Beswitherick stick side to tie the game at one.

Turner-Commer gave Assiniboine a 2-1 lead with 1:06 to go in the opening period when she took a feed in the slot from Cora Fijala and beat Corbiere.

Turner-Commer then capped off the scoring with her sixth goal of the tournament, scoring into an empty Sault College net in the final minute of play.
