Sault College scores hoops win, v-ball loss

The Sault College Cougars continued the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) regular season schedule on Friday night with a convincing 96-55 win over the Redeemer Royals in men's basketball.

The Sault College Cougars continued the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) regular season schedule on Friday night with a convincing 96-55 win over the Redeemer Royals in men's basketball.

The Cougars women's volleyball team, which is also into the OCAA season, followed the basketball victory by dropping a four-set decision to Redeemer.

In the basketball contest, the Cougars took control of the game early and never looked back as Cougars head coach Thomas Cory utilized his entire bench and had 13 different players figure in the scoring.

Sean Seivwright paced Cougars, who led 44-24 at the half, with 16 points while Jean Louis Ouattara, Brady Bolan and Julius Puddister added 12 each. Nate Whalen added 11 points, Yusuf Wong Chong nine and Jeff Rennison eight.

Dustin Vanhouwelingen topped all Royals scorers with 13 points.

The Cougars, who sit in first place in the west division at 2-0, will be home for an exhibition game on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. against Alpena before hitting the road for the next two weekends.

Sault College visits Lambton on Friday night before meeting St. Clair on Saturday afternoon to begin their first OCAA road trip.

In volleyball, the Cougars dropped a four-set decision to Redeemer 25-19, 22-25, 25-19 and 26-24. Angela Mei led the Cougars offensively with 10 kills, three blocks and three aces.

Sault College falls to 0-2 in match play this season and will also hit the road this weekend for games in Lambton and St. Clair.
