A pair of goals in the third period lifted the Sault College women’s hockey team to a tournament-opening win at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II national championship in St. Louis on Friday.
Sault College kicked off the five-day event with a 4-2 win over Boston College to begin round robin play.
A goal by Alyssa Byers with 6:27 to go in the third period was the difference for Sault College, while Hayden Dunn sealed the victory with an empty net goal in the final seconds of regulation time.
The goals came after Boston College battled back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals late in the second period to tie the game.
Katelynn Jacques opened the scoring for Sault College with a goal late in the opening period before Emma Lee made it a 2-0 game just under six minutes into the middle period.
Hanna MacLeod and Margot Mulcahy scored for Boston College 2:26 apart in the second period to tie the game and set the stage for Byers’ game winner.
Cassidy Dobson got the start in goal for Sault College and stopped 16 shots in the win.
Boston College goaltender Samantha Burke made 30 saves in a game that saw her e club get outshot by a 15-2 margin in the third period.
Round robin play continues for Sault College on Saturday when the team takes on the University of St. Thomas.
The team will then wrap up round robin play on Sunday with a game against Boston University.
The first place teams in each pool will advance to semifinal play on Monday.
The national championship game is scheduled for Tuesday.
