Twelve members of the Sault College Cougars women’s hockey team made a brief appearance at the college’s monthly board of governors meeting on Thursday after winning the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 national championships.
The team won the title with a 6-1 victory over Northeastern University in Boston on Monday after being unbeaten throughout the 2022-2023 season, winning all 31 of their games.
Over the course of the championships, the Cougars defeated Rowan University, University of Delaware and Providence College before beating Dakota College in the semi-final game.
None of the Cougars addressed the board, but right winger Meagan Daley hoisted the championship trophy before cheering teammates and college governors.
“Congratulations to all of you,” said Don Mitchell, Sault College board of governors first vice-chair to the team.
“It’s so wonderful to see this come to our city and what you’ve done to put our name forward in the collegiate aspect. Thank you so much. It’s a pleasure and a wonderful opportunity for all of you, something you will never forget,” Mitchell said.
“In sports they have an analogy where they talk about punching above our weight. This group punched above their weight. We beat four-year universities. We beat universities that have six times the enrolment that Sault College has. That’s an amazing accomplishment,” said Ron Common, Sault College president.
