A trio of one-goal games highlighted action on day two of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Monday.
Team Canada Red held off a late charge by Team Sweden to pick up a 4-3 victory in Tuesday’s late game.
Serron Noel and Riley Stotts had a goal and an assist each for Team Canada Red. Riley Damiani assisted on a pair of goals. Billy Moskal’s goal midway through the third period was the game-winner. Ty Dellandrea had the other goal for Team Canada Red.
Team Canada Red Coach Rocky Thompson spoke of the resiliency of his team after giving up a shorthanded goal in the latter half of the third period.
“For some teams that could submarine you but we were quite resilient,” Thompson said. “From an aspect of growth in the tournament, that was a huge stepping stone and building block for our team.”
Adam Bokvist, Carl Jakobsson and Llukas Wernblom scored for Sweden.
Team USA picked up its second victory in as many days by beating Team Canada White 3-2 at the Essar Centre.
Joel Farabee, who scored the overtime winner for the Americans on Sunday night against the Czech Republic, scored on the power play with just over five minutes remaining to give Team USA the win.
Jacob Semik and Blade Jenkins also had power play goals for the Americans. Bode Wilde added a pair of assists.
Tristen Nielsen and Elijah Brown scored for Team Canada White.
Team USA Coach Danton Cole noted the ability if the American team to battle through the contest that felt a lot tighter even with a 2-0 lead in the second period.
Cole would add that improving on a daily basis is key in a short tournament.
“You try to build and you try to get a little better because the thing with these tournaments is everyone gets better every game,” Cole said. “It’s imperative that we do as well. It’s good to see which one of our guys jumps up and grab the moment.”
In other action on Monday Team Canada Black beat Team Czech Republic 5-4. Luke Burzan’s goal at 11:30 of the third period was the game winner while Allan McShane had a pair of goals. Chase Wouters chipped in with a goal and an assist. Aidan Dudas had a pair of assists. Eric Florchuk had the other goal for the Canadian team. Ondrej Pavel scored a pair of goals for the Czech Republic. Jan Dluhos and Tomas Dajcar also scored. Tomas Koblizek assisted on three Czech Republic goals.
At the John Rhodes Community Centre, Team Russia blanked Team Finland 2-0. Daniil Isaev stopped 37 shots for the shutout. Pavel Koreshkov and Egor Sokolov completed the Russian scoring. Finnish goaltender Kalle Nurmi made 19 saves.
Action for day three of the round robin opens at noon at the Essar Centre as Team Canada White faces the Czech Republic. Other games on the final day of round robin action include Russia vs. Team Canada Red (4 p.m., Essar Centre); Sweden vs. Finland (6 p.m., John Rhodes Community Centre); and Team USA vs. Team Canada Black (7:30 p.m., Essar Centre).
Quarter-final action is set for Thursday.
