OFSAA report: Knights, Saints eliminated

The St. Mary's Knights and St. Basil Saints senior basketball teams saw their run come to an end at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA)championships on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Sir James Dunn Eagles senior girls volleyball team will conclude the round robin portion of the AAA championships on Wednesday after compiling a 1-2 record on Tuesday.

The Knights fell in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night in the AA championships while St. Basil was eliminated in the preliminary rounds in the single 'A' playdowns.

*** ST. MARY'S:

After opening the AA tournament in Belleville with a pair of wins, the Knights fell 57-40 to Runnymede in the quarterfinal.

Pat Murray and John Mullin scored 10 points for the Knights while Jordan Forbes added eight and Brian Denneney seven.

Earlier on Tuesday, the fifth seeded Knights defeated Garneau 43-38 to advance to the quarterfinal. Denneney and Forbes scored 10 points each with Murray adding seven.

To open the tournament on Monday, St. Mary's beat Moira 49-36 on the strength of 23 points from Murray. Forbes poured in 12 points and Tyler Binkley eight.

*** ST. BASIL:

The Saints dropped a pair of games to be eliminated at the single 'A' championships in Sturgeon Falls.

In their opening game on Monday, the Saints fell 32-24 to Kapuskasing before losing to Toronto's Peoples Christian Academy 56-49 on Tuesday.

Tom Campagna scored 12 points to lead the Saints against Peoples while Nick DiDonato led with five points against Kapuskasing.

*** SIR JAMES DUNN:

The Eagles sit at 1-2 in the AAA championships in Stratford after the first day of competition.

Sir James Dunn opened the tournament with 25-14, 25-23 win over Hamilton's Bishop Ryan before dropping a tough three set decision to St. Catherines Eden 15-25, 25-16, 16-18.

In their final match of the night, the Eagles fell 12-25, 17-25 to Cambridge's Jacob Hespeler.

The Eagles conclude the round robin on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. against Maple.

The playoff round is scheduled to begin this afternoon with the championship game slated for 7 p.m.
