OFSAA REPORT: Eagles remain alive

The following is a look at how the Sir James Dunn Eagles girls volleyball team along with the boys basketball teams from Bawating and St. Mary's fared at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) playdowns on Monday and Tuesday.

*** OFSAA 'AA' VOLLEYBALL:

The Sir James Dunn Eagles have a 2-1 record after competition on Tuesday to remain alive in Clinton/Goderich.

The Eagles, the tournament's sixth seed, opened the tournament with 25-16, 25-20 win over Wingham's F.E. Madill before defeating St. Catherines' Govenor Simcoe 25-13, 25-20. The Eagles then lost their first game to third seeded Penetanguishene 25-18, 25-22.

With a win on Wednesday morning against Temiskaming at 8 a.m., the Eagles will advance to the quarterfinal round at 12:30 p.m. The semi-final games are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon and the medal games in the evening.

*** OFSAA 'AA' BASKETBALL:

In Windsor, the St. Mary's Knights, ranked seventh heading into the tournament, dropped their first two games to be eliminated from competition.

In their opener on Monday, the Knights fell 52-44 to Toronto's Central Commerce. Jordan Forbes paced St. Mary's with 13 points while Pat Murray added 12 and Wes Ontonovich nine.

On Tuesday, the Knights dropped a 69-60 decision to Chatham's John McGregor. Ontonovich led the offense with 20 points while Forbes added 16 and Murray 11.

*** OFSAA 'AAA' BASKETBALL:

The Bawating Braves nearly shocked a top seed but were eliminated from further play after a pair of losses on Monday.

The Braves, the 15th seed, opened the competition with a 63-43 loss to Kingston's Frontenac Secondary School before nearly knocking off the second seed St. Marquerite D'Youville from Brampton in their second game of the day 62-60.

D.J. Wright led the Braves with 24 points against Frontenac and 23 against St. Marguerite. Kyle Gauthier scored eight points against Kingston while Craig Nielson added 12 points and Dave Fremlin 11 against Brampton.
