North Stars take a pair

The Soo North Stars picked up two more road victories over the weekend in Great North Midget League play.

On Friday, the North Stars scored an 8-2 win over the Valley East Cobras before doubling the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats 6-3 on Saturday.

Adam Pyymaki scored twice and added an assist in Friday's win while Tyler Liukkonen also notched a pair. Dan Vernelli recorded a goal and two assists and Jacob Chiblow a goal and an assist while singles went to Brent Perlini and Derrek Coccimiglio. Mark Hoffman chipped in with three assists and Dean Howard two.

On Saturday, Howard led the attack with three goals and an assist. Perlini scored once and set up another while Pyymaki and Trevor McNutt rounded out the scoring. Coccimglio added two assists.

The victories improve the North Stars record to 26-2-1-1 for 54 points and an 11 point lead over the Sudbury Nickel Capitals for first place in the GNML.

Next action for the North Stars is Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29 at the John Rhodes Community Centre when they take on the Sabrecats. Game times are Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
