The Soo North Stars ran into a hot goaltender on Sunday afternoon and received their first taste of defeat in regulation time.

Backed by the strong efforts of Jason Fehr in net, the New Liskeard Cubs salvaged a weekend split with the North Stars by claming a 4-1 win in Great North Midget League play at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The North Stars had opened the series on Saturday night with a 2-0 win. Ryan Dube would get the start in goal on Sunday for the locals after Travis O'Brien's shutout efforts the night before.

Tavis Holden provided the offensive spark for the Cubs with three goals, including two on the power play. Brodie Barron added another marker for the Cubs while Jason Bird replied with a power play goal for the North Stars.

Despite the loss, the North Stars remain on top of the GNML standings with a 4-1-0-1 record for nine points, one ahead of the North Bay Trappers.

The North Stars will be back on the road next weekend with stops in Kirkland Lake on Saturday night and New Liskeard on Sunday afternoon.

The club will not return home until Oct. 16 and 17 when Kirkland Lake will visit the Rhodes for a pair of contests.
