North Stars now 5-0 at the provincials

The Soo North Stars have set themselves up for a first place showdown on Friday at the Ontario Hockey Federation Midget AAA Regional Championships in Toronto.

With a perfect 5-0 record heading into the final day of round robin competition, the North Stars will meet the Don Mills Flyers, who also boast a 5-0 record, on Friday at noon.

The winner will capture first place and face the fourth place finisher in one semi-final game on Saturday. The loser will play the third place finisher in the other semi-final.

The North Stars recorded their fifth victory on Thursday night with a 4-0 shutout of the Markham Waxers. Earlier in the day, the North Stars walked all over the Nepean Raiders 9-2.

Jason Bird led the North Stars attack in their win over Nepean with two goals and three assists. Paul Dupont and Jake Reid scored twice and added an assist each while Brad DiCandia recorded a goal and three assists. Trevor McNutt scored once and added an assist while Derrek Coccimiglio scored the other and Matt Conway chipped in three assists.

Dupont scored twice to pace the Stars past Markham. Nic Lang and McNutt scored the others while Reid and Bird added two assists each.

On Wednesday, the North Stars doubled up the Gloucester Rangers 4-2. Ben Davey, Dupont, Reid and Michael Quesnele provided the scoring.

The semi-final winners will meet in Sunday's gold medal game while the semi-final losers will meet for bronze.

The eventual gold medalists will represent the region at the national championships.
