SEARCHMONT SKI RUNNERS

Local ski club Searchmont Ski Runners will have nine athletes representing the Northern Ontario Division (NOD) at the U16 OCUP Finals being held March 18-22 at Searchmont Ski Resort.
Emily Bateman, Kara Derosario, Ella Filice, Lara Fraser, Miila Gordon, Katie Real, and Malaya Schikofsky will race for the girls, and Blake Cond and Jacob Schikofsky for the boys.
The event is the culmination of countless hours of training and competition for these incredibly talented and hardworking young athletes.
“I’m looking forward to it being our home hill,” says Katie Real when asked what she is most looking forward to about the provincial race.
Katie, who has been racing with SSR since she was 5, has stayed with the sport, putting in years of commitment. She says the fact that she has been “skiing since I was little, it kind of keeps me motivated to finish my years out”.
In order to mentally prepare to perform at such a high level, Kara Derosario starts first thing in the morning. “I listen to music in the morning to shake my nerves," she says. "Listening to music reminds me that I’ll have fun no matter the outcome of my run.”
Searchmont Ski Resort will host the event, drawing 160 athletes from all four Alpine Ontario divisions to compete in the Slalom, Super G, and Giant Slalom events.
The resort will be open with lots of events going on, giving visitors an opportunity to watch these exciting races and cheer on our local athletes while enjoying a great day at the hill.
