Steel City MMA kickboxers are coming home from Sudbury with some extra hardware after a successful weekend at the Sudbury Smash Kickboxing tournament.

Ten athletes from the Sault Ste. Marie gym travelled with the team collecting four gold and five silver medals.

Steel City was led by gold medal performances from Luca Paluzzi, Daniel Zavitz, Kane Mitchell and Faryn Barbeau. Paluzzi and Zavitz both went 2-0 on the day to claim gold in their divisions, while Mitchell and Barbeau both finished with one win and no losses to go home with gold.

“It’s nice to get our youth teams back to competing regularly,” said head coach Brent Fryia.

“Those kids worked hard, and coach John Reid did an excellent job preparing the team. Him and his assistant coaches deserve a lot of credit,” said Fryia of the weekend’s performance. “We’re happy to get good results, but these developmental tournaments are really about getting kids used to competing, stepping outside of their comfort zone a little bit and growing as martial artists and athletes. It’s really a bonus to come home with that much hardware.”

SCMMA youth and teen kickboxing coach John Reid expressed his pride in the performance of the Steel City group.

“They performed so well today. We couldn’t be happier. These kids worked really hard leading up to the tournament, and it showed.”

The tournament, sanctioned by WAKO Canada (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) featured teams from across Ontario.
