Local gymnasts flex after winning team titles

National team attended the Save a Heart Invitational and came home with two team titles as well as some personal bests

This past weekend in Waterford Michigan, the national team from the Sault Ste. Marie Gymnastics Club attended the Save a Heart Invitational and came home with two team titles as well as some personal bests.

The team awards are so significant and such a huge accomplishment for the club for several reasons, a news release said.

Only the top three scores on every event count and the two teams that the club brought to the competition only had four athletes in each category, which means there was little room for error.

The other clubs that SSMGC competes against often range from 8 to 20 athletes per team.

With gymnastics mainly being an individual sport, it is so rewarding when everyone's individual efforts are combined to lead to a team success, the release said.

In the Platinum Category (Ava Greener, Peyton O'Brien, Daiveny Pringle and Myah Stefanizzi) SSMGC finished First in the team competition naming them to first Platinum team in SSMGC club history to bring home a team championship.

The Platinum individual results were:

Jr Division:
    •    Ava Greener (age 13) - 1st (vault), 1st (bars), 1st (beam), 2nd (floor) and 1st All-Around
    •    Peyton O'Brien (age 10) - 7th (vault), 2nd (bars), 3rd (beam), 1st (floor) and 2nd All-Around
    •    Daiveny Pringle (age 14) - 9th (vault), 4th (bars), 7th (beam), 6th (floor) and 6th All-Around

Sr Division:

In the Gold Category (Ivy Mooney, Addison Keating, Reagan Deschamps, Zeegwen Rickard) SSMGC finished Second in the team competition. It has been several years since the club secured a Gold level team finish.

The Gold Category individual results were:

Jr A Division:
    •    Ivy Mooney (age 11) - 9th (vault), 4th (bars), 7th (beam), 6th (floor) and 5th All-Around
