Local athletes compete in NOSSA cross-country event

The one-day event saw a handful of Sault runners turn in strong performances

The Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) cross-country championship wrapped up locally on Wednesday with a number of local runners faring well.

Taryn Greco of Superior Heights finished third in the senior girl’s 6.2 km race with a time of 25:22.

Behari Gasay of White Pines was fifth in the senior boy’s event with a time of 20:44.

In the junior girl’s 5.1 km event, Hannah Heimonen of Superior Heights finished third with a time of 20.58, just behind Lindsay Fletcher of St. Joseph Scollard Hall, who finished two seconds ahead of the Superior Heights runner.

Alana McKenzie of Korah finished sixth with a time of 22:21 while Belen Henson, also of Korah, grabbed a top-10 finish with a time of 22:43.

In the junior boy’s 5.1 km race, Korah’s Austin Schwartz-Montgomery was the top local runner as he finished sixth with a time of 19:03. His teammate, Ben Suopera, finished eighth with a time of 19:06.

Korah’s Lucy Lafrance finished fourth in the midget girl’s 4 km event with a time of 16:31.

Dylan Garson, also of Korah, was the top Sault runner in the boy’s 4 km, finishing seventh with a time of 14:34.
