Lakers beat Buckeyes 7-6 in overtime

LSSU never trails; Osman scores game-winner

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Lake Superior State hockey team ended a 14-game winless streak against Ohio State by beating the Buckeyes 7-6 in overtime on Saturday at Value City Arena in Columbus.

The Lakers (1-1 overall, 1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), who lost 1-0 at OSU on Friday, also snapped a three-game scoreless streak against Ohio State (1-1 overall, 1-1 CCHA) in startling fashion. They never trailed in the game, leading 3-2 after one period and answering every time the Buckeyes scored.

Ohio State attempted to deflate LSSU twice in the third period. Five minutes after scoring a goal that put the Lakers ahead, 5-4, LSSU junior Dan Eves took a checking-from-behind penalty and game misconduct. OSU's Mathieu Beaudoin scored during the five-minute major penalty and tied it, 5-5.

Lake Superior State reclaimed a one-goal lead, 6-5, when freshman Nathan Perkovich scored LSSU's second power-play goal of the game at 13:13 of the third period.

A desperate Ohio State team pulled goaltender Joseph Palmer in favor of an extra attacker with 1:10 remaining in regulation. The move paid off as Beaudoin tied it again, 6-6, at 19:59.

Senior Dominic Osman scored the game-winner at 2:45 of the overtime period with the help of a set-up play by Derek R. Smith. Troy Schwab also drew an assist.

Nik Sellers, Josh Smith, Matt Martello and John Scrymgeour also scored Laker goals. For Sellers, Martello and Scrymgeour, they were their first collegiate goals. Schwab finished with three assists, while Trent Campbell and Steven Kaunisto contributed two each. Simon Gysbers, Pat Aubry, Derek A. Smith, Sellers and Barnabas Birkeland added one helper each.

LSSU freshman goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 29 saves to earn his first collegiate win. Palmer finished with 27 saves.

LSSU was 2-for-7 on the power play, while OSU finished 3-for-6. Sim scored the Lakers' other power-play goal at 16:19 of the first period.

Beaudoin notched a hat trick to lead the Buckeyes. His first goal was a short-handed marker at 19:45 of the second period that evened the score, 4-4.

LSSU coach Jim Roque will recap the game during the Laker Hockey Show at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday at Moloney's Alley. The show will be broadcast live on WSOO 1230-AM.

Buckeyes edge Lakers 1-0 in opener

Jakaitis totals 43 saves

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Lake Superior State senior goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 43 saves, but an unassisted short-handed goal by Ohio State's Tommy Goebel was the difference in Friday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener between the Lakers and Buckeyes.

OSU edged LSSU 1-0 to hand the Lakers their third shutout loss in as many games against the Buckeyes.

Ohio State controlled the game's middle stanza, out-shooting Lake Superior State 24-7. The Buckeyes out-shot the Lakers 44-22 for the game.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play as LSSU finished 0-for-7, and OSU was 0-for-5. Lake Superior State went on a power play at 17:47 of the third period and pulled Jakaitis in favor of an extra attacker at 18:51, but failed to score.
